Small Potty: Though it is important to select a potty that is easy to use when you are ready to start potty training, it is equally important for your potty training toddler to feel included in the process. Take them shopping and allow them to make help with the selection. Ownership will encourage them look forward to their new experience.
Timer: The purpose of a timer is to give your child ample warning before it is time to use the restroom. You can purchase a simple egg timer from any kitchen supply store, or use a timer that is a standard on most any cell phone or computer.
Pull-ups: Pull-ups are best for mid-day naps or evening sleep only. It is a far better practice to keep your child out of diapers as much as possible and eliminate the frequency of mixed messages.
Underwear: Same as with the potty, it is important your child feels that they are a part of the process from the moment you decide to start potty training. Take your little one shopping and encourage them to choose underwear that features a favorite character or design that will provide them with familiar comfort.
Plastic underpants cover: Optional, but a good idea nonetheless. Plastic covers should be bought in a size that’s a little loose so they are easy to pull on and off over the underwear. Designs that employ a simple elastic waistband are best.
Wipees: An essential ingredient to any juvenile restroom, these will help you keep your child tidy, before, during and after a restroom break.
Rewards Chart: Rewards charts help your child feel success for their effort. You can make your own or find free ones online. In the resources section of Potty Training Power you will find a few sample reward charts, though you are of course more than welcome to design your own. Simply make sure you leave enough space for a couple of weeks worth of rewards.
Waterproof mattress pad: You can either purchase a waterproof mattress pad, or a sheet of waterproof barrier (a soft cloth-like material that has plastic on one side). Whichever you decide, it is prudent to protect your child’s mattress from accidents while sleeping (these are sure to happen when you first start potty training).
Children’s books or DVD’s: Take your child to the bookstore or library and get as many books on potty training as possible. As with the potty and the underwear, they will want to be a part of the process. Make sure that at least a few of the books actually show little boys and girls using the potty. Though it is best to have both genders represented, it is absolutely necessary that your child’s is dominant.
A Doll: Having a doll is an excellent prop. It allows your child to practice teaching what they have learned by passing it onto another, even if it is only in their imagination. And yes, this works with boys as well.
Toilet Training Tip: By including your child in the preparation process, you are allowing them to feel some control over the situation, and even believe it was partly their idea -a terrific way to find toilet training triumph.
In an upcoming post, we’ll move into a few potty training do’s and don’ts. You’ll be ready to start potty training in no time.
